Storms River Mouth Cave

Length: 52m  |  Grade: 5D  |  Surveyed: 2006-06-29

Access to the next cave requires a difficult climb out of the gully leading up to Storms River Boulder Beach Cave. A scramble over buttresses and rocks leads one towards the very mouth of the river. The cave entrance is lost amongst tangled coastal scrub bushes, trees and rocks at the root of last rock band before one reaches the sea.

Description

A short scramble leads up a rubble and boulder slope to the back of a gully where a horizontal slot forms the entrance to a small cave. The cave entrance is in a small cliff and is partially blocked by an accumulation of stones and debris at the mouth. The ground slopes quite steeply over the first few metres into the cave and then levels out. There is evidence of old midden on the floor of the cave. The midden is not easy to see as it is partially covered by organic material that has fallen in from the entrance. There are a few calcite formations on the left wall near the back of the cave, but these are minimal. A tap-strength stream of water issues from a small crack in the upper left wall. The floor slopes gently towards the back of the cave where bubbly orange brown ooze issues from a small pool and seeps down the slope. The cave is about 50m long.
