Filmy Fern Cave
Region: Groot River Mouth (Eastern end of TNP)
Filmy Fern Cave – approx 30m
By Anthony Hitchcock
The second cave proved to be more interesting. A short climb up the
river bank led to a tall, narrow entrance. The cave proved to be a
vertical slot with water covering the length of the floor. The first few
metres was chocked with a fern-like water plant, which could not be
identified by the Compton Herberium (Kirstenbosch). The water becomes
deeper further into the cave. The bottom proved to be liquid mud and in
places the water was chest deep. The cave is approximately 30m long and
was home a few insectivorous bats. This cave should be surveyed.
