Picnic Cave

Length: 14m  |  Grade: 5C  |  Surveyed: 1995-09-16

Anthony Hitchcock and Peter Swart, 13 July 2002

Extension: 14m

Introduction

Meyer discovered this cave on 1st March 1924. In the same diary entry, he also mentions the discovery and painting the names of nearby caves such as Creeper Fern Cave, Twin Caverns and Surprise Grotto.

Description

Picnic cave is found at the base of a cliff a little lower and to the west of Devil’s Pit. The entrance is about 3m high and the floor slopes down to a flat-floored chamber. The square shaped chamber has vertical walls and is about 4m wide and 10m high. There appears to be an entrance to a passage 5m above the left-hand wall facing in, but it has not been investigated.

Survey and Exploration

Anthony Hitchcock, Peter Swart and Joan Vlok surveyed the cave on the 16th September 1995. Picnic Cave is a very small cave or rather a shelter only 14m long. The upper passage to the left was not explored, as the wall is too difficult to scale.

Fauna

Cave crickets and some spiders.

Safety

A safe cave to visit as long as one does not attempt climbing the wall.
Watch out for broken glass on the floor. As the cave is easy to get to, and has a flat floor, people often make fires in the cave, and leave the remains of their picnics.
