Daniels Den Cave
Length: 15m | Grade: 5C | Surveyed: 1995-09-14
Extension: 16m, Height: 6m
This is not Johan Meyer's Daniel's Den, although it is close by. When Anthony Hitchcock was searching for caves using an old hand-drawn map, he came across this cave and thought it had to be Daniel's Den. Much later, other S.A.S.A members (Ron Zeeman, I think?) found the original Meyer's Daniel's Den. I refer to the redicovered cave as Daniel's Den Original.
The flat area around Daniel's Den is a pavement of quartzite, mostly covered with a thin layer of soil, but exposed in parts. One of the slots in pavement is 5m deep, and forms Daniel's Den. The roof of the cave is solid for most of the length of the cave, but in certain parts, it consist of choke stones jammed into the top of the slot. The entrance to the cave has formed where some of the choke stones have fallen in. From the plan of the cave, the start of a network system of perpendicular joints can be seen.
The water which flows into the cave leaves through a narrow tunnel, filled with sand and boulders.
Daniel's II
Extension: 6m, Height: 3m
Approximately 50m to the south of Daniel's Den is a small cave formed by a grike with a partially solid, and partially collapse filled roof. The floor is littered with rubble from the roof collapse, and there is little possibility of extension.
