Elands River Mouth 2 Cave

ERM 2 - 40m

The second cave surveyed was approximately 40m further upstream than ERM 1. This cave has its entrance obscured by large boulders that fill the entrance slot. At high tide the sea laps at the base of the entrance. A short climb between the boulders leads into a tall vertical passage that extends for 40m. The floor near the end consists of a crust, floating on half a metre of muddy guano.

There were about twenty Rhinolophus and fewer Miniopteris bats in the cave. All of the bats roosted individually, even the Miniopteris. When disturbed, the Miniopterus tended to cluster into small groups.
