Ronans Well Cave
Length: 800m | Surveyed: 1982-05-00
Extract from Fire Protection Booklet
The voorkamer, as it were, of Ronan's Well is an open cave 15 feet deep. There is water here all the year round. The entrance of the dark grotto behind is through a hole in the wall 18 feet above. Under damp conditions the ascent and descent of this wall is difficult. The passage runs in till the first pit is reached, across which a precarious bridge is provided by a log of wood. Further on another pit is passed, with a log providing a hand-rail. The fourth pit is 15 feet deep. Here the name of the cave has been put. The passage continues on from here, the furthest point reached being 75 yards from the entrance. This strange grotto is the most difficult and dangerous of the caves.
Note that the above description was before the Narrows breakthrough in the 1950s.
This is a dangerous cave, and extreme care should be taken when visiting it.
