Introduction

John Meyer records painting the name Dragon Cave on the 21st February 1924. It is a small insignificant grotto at the top of the terraces that one climbs from the Clovelly side of Cave Peak.

Description

The entrance is via low crawl-way which leads into a small linear chamber that hardly gets dark even at the back.

Survey and exploration

The grotto was surveyed for record purposes only as it is so small it is of little significance. It is a mere xm long and has no potential for further discoveries.

Fauna

Mainly spiders

Safety

The cave itself if small and safe inside. Access to the cave is via some steep terraces that drop away to Clovelly which makes getting to the cave much more dangerous than the cave itself.

Extract from Fire Protection Services booklet

In the top of this gully there is a little cave named Dragon Cave. It has a passage of 30 feet leading to a small chamber. Overlooking the approaches to the mountain this cave looks exactly like the place from which the dragons, who terrified the Swiss mountaineers in mediaeval times, would have issued.

The cave is only a few metres deep, but does have some permanent darkness.
