Caves to the East of the Tsitsikama National Park

Introduction

The caves to the east of the park are interesting in that within a small
area, there are three very different types of cave. The Klasies River
Sea Tunnel is an active sea cave, the Klasies River Cave is an important
archaeological site, and the Druipkelder Cave, shows an interesting
history of rising and falling sea levels.

Klasies River Sea Tunnel – 70m

While we were surveying the main Klasies River Mouth cave (KRM 1 & 2), a
local land owner, Mrs Janine van der Linde of Pietersburg, told us of a
sea tunnel further to the West, and another 2 caves to the East. On
further investigation, we found the sea tunnel. It about 70m long and
filled with sea water. The southern entrance of the tunnel is open to
the sea, and waves wash into the cave. The northern entrance opens onto
a pebble beach, and at high tide the waves wash right through the cave,
and return to the sea over the pebble beach.
